Bronwyn was keen to offer up a Burda magazine for last months sew-along but life is busy sometimes and it didn’t work out so this month we’re going with not one, but two (!) Ottobre magazine issues…because Ottobre is kind of indie, OK, maybe not really but I have never seen one in the shops and it’s my giveaway, so my rules 😉
I will do two prize draws, one exclusively for the Kiwi readers and one for everyone else so please note in your comments if you are NZ based or international.

Bugger. This is what you miss out on when you get over a month behind in blog reading!
I trace my patterns using a serrated tracing wheel and brown kraft paper , but many others prefer to use tracing paper and pencils. I add my seam allowances when I cut out my fabric by simply cutting 5/8”/1.5cm away from the edge of my paper pattern, but there are double tracing wheels available to do this for you .
I sew in Canada and I am yet to try sewing with any magazine.
Hi, I’m in NZ and am in the middle of earthquake repairs so not sewing at the moment (can’t get to my machine), but I have sewn with Ottobre before, my favourite t-shirt patterns come from them. My subscription is no longer current though as I have quite a few back issues which should cover the boys and my needs for a while, however I don’t have the summer issue you’re giving away so I’ll keep my fingers crossed!
Hello 🙂 I m from Bosnia and Herzegovina, and I started sewing a year ago. I haven’t sewed anything from Ottobre magazine or any independants, I have only used Burda magazines because they are only one sewing magazines available in my country and they’re available on German language which I don t know very well. So it s hard but with google translate I pull that off. I sewed for my self for now, and I sewed a lots of stuff. Sewing is so amazing, and I just love it and enjoy every second of it. 🙂 I would love to have some more sewing magazins , specially to try Ottobre magazine. I sew on internet that they re very good. 🙂 And I m a new follower of your blog, it s amazing and helpful. Keep up the good work 🙂
i’m originally from Indonesia but am now living in Finland (yeah, i know, the land of Ottobre magazines :D). i have some used Ottobre kids magazines that i’m planning to make clothes from someday… like when i have a child? …but have never actually done it yet. i once copied a leggings pattern from a friend’s Ottobre magazine and did actually make a pair of leggings and also altered it to make a pair of tights. 🙂
i’ve been following your blog for about half a year now, and was tempted to enter the sew-along last month, but in the end i didn’t because i wasn’t sure if i would actually have time. maybe next time.
the autumn/winter Ottobre you’re giving away looks great with all the basic essentials for Finnish autumn/winter, i’d sure love to make those dresses. but even if i don’t win it, thanks so much for sharing the info about Pattern Postie! they have such a huge range of patterns, i think i’m gonna go crazy trying to choose which one(s) i want to get!
Hello hello, fellow kiwi sewer here actually. Im up in the sunny Coromandel / Auckland some parts of the week. I have never seen that mag and would love to explore it. Am enjoying Indie pattern month, sewed up and posted about my first indie pattern last night the Pendrell Blouse…ordered some wolfy pants from Papercut and am losing sleep with excitement of how cool they are gonna be when they are done – mucho colours!! yahoo!!

Awesome! I recently discovered Pattern Postie and ordered a Burda back issue which was much better than paying $7 for a single pattern download from their website. I’ve heard of Ottobre but never seen an issue before! I’m sewing along with you but a month behind.. I just traced out my first Burda magazine pattern using your great guide from last month. Thanks for that, it was really helpful! I’m sewing in Dunedin, NZ.

Hi there! I’m a Kiwi living in North Carolina, USA. I had my first experience at sewing with an Ottobre pattern recently – from the Spring/Summer 2012 issue that you are giving away to the NZers. It’s an awesome issue – I want to make everything in it! I made two of the short-sleeved knit cardigan, and three of the wraparound skirt, and wear then all frequently. Sidenote: WHY are patterns so expensive here? I don’t mind paying for them, but I die a little inside to see Americans able to pick them up on sale for 99c and we always have to pay at least $20. I’m happy to see Pattern Postie though, because if I’m stuck paying $$ I’d rather get it from someone like this than Spotlight.

I sewed from Ottobre, but only from the childrens magazines. The womens’ issue is available here in the netherlands, but I never ever saw something interesting enough to make me buy it. I have quite some experience with Burda-sewing. And ever since I read your post on tracing Burda patterns, I find myself putting on my “Burda-vision” when tracing patterns. And then I laugh out loud. Yay!

ooooohhhh – I am not really sewing this month, so missing out on the indie sew-along (boo hoo), and I have only seen the children’s version of this magazine in the shops here in Belgium, it would be wonderful to see what they offer for adults 🙂

Our weather here in Sydney is very much NZ-like at the moment – my friend from the Lower Hutt tells me she didn’t realize that rain doesn’t normally fall sideways until she left windy Wellington! The fashions in Ottobre are quite unique, so I definitely think it counts as an independent

Wow how generous! I’ve never heard of this magazine. I wish I could join your indie sewalong, but I’m still working on my Burda jacket from last month’s sewalong. Anyway, I’m in Brazil and I’ve never sewn with this magazine =) PS I’m not tired of the cold yet =) I think its because we don’t get snow in Rio so its not really that cold compared to some!

How did I NOT know about Pattern Postie before? This could be a great thing or a bad thing (my sewing heart will be happy, but my bank balance may be sad!). I sew in beautiful Te Whanganui-a-Tara just like you! I couldn’t do the Burda sew-a-long but I’m determined to do this indie pattern sew-a-long! (even if I’m leaving it a bit late to start – eek!)

Ok! seriously have I been living under a rock!! Why have I not seen this websight and magazine before? I live in Tauranga NZ and get around the country frequently – I know of the whereabouts of every fabric shop in the country ( and visit them) subscribe to dozens of sewing blogs and websites and yet I’ve missed a significant local site and Ottobre magazine- probably just as well as I don’t know where I’d put them anyway as I just about every monthly Burda since 1976! But please count me in!

I have a Burda magazine and am planning a make from it, but have never used nor purchased an Ottobre magazine, nor have I seen one here in stores. I’m very excited to get my hands on one!!
