Indie Pattern Giveaway (kind of)

The wonderful Bronwyn of Pattern Postie contacted me recently to offer a give-away for Indie pattern month.

  • Pattern Postie is based in NZ but posts to Australia and worldwide
  • She stocks all major sewing brands with 20% off Kwik Sew and Vogue every day
  • Their stock of Out-of-Print patterns is huge with up to 70% discount off RRP
  • Her site is also an excellent source for current and back issues of BurdaStyle and Ottobre
  • She currently has Simplicity on sale at half price until June 30th
  • Plus lots more so go take a look 🙂

Bronwyn was keen to offer up a Burda magazine for last months sew-along but life is busy sometimes and it didn’t work out so this month we’re going with not one, but two (!) Ottobre magazine issues…because Ottobre is kind of indie, OK, maybe not really but I have never seen one in the shops and it’s my giveaway, so my rules 😉

I will do two prize draws, one exclusively for the Kiwi readers and one for everyone else so please note in your comments if you are NZ based or international.

For the Kiwi’s – Ottobre Spring/Summer 2012 – because I don’t know about the rest of you but I need a reminder that Summer will return sometime!

And for the everyone else – Ottobre Autumn/Winter 2011

So please comment below, tell me where in the world you sew and if you are sewing along with us or if you have ever sewn from an Ottobre magazine.

This give away is open until Midnight (NZST) Sunday June 30th, I will draw the winners (possibly with help from Harri) on Monday evening.

A huge thank you to Bronwyn for her generous offer, I’m excited to see what the winners stitch up.

I’ll leave you with this super cute photo of Bronwyn teaching her daughter some sewing basics, awwww!

  1. I trace my patterns using a serrated tracing wheel and brown kraft paper , but many others prefer to use tracing paper and pencils. I add my seam allowances when I cut out my fabric by simply cutting 5/8”/1.5cm away from the edge of my paper pattern, but there are double tracing wheels available to do this for you .

  2. Hi, I’m in NZ and am in the middle of earthquake repairs so not sewing at the moment (can’t get to my machine), but I have sewn with Ottobre before, my favourite t-shirt patterns come from them. My subscription is no longer current though as I have quite a few back issues which should cover the boys and my needs for a while, however I don’t have the summer issue you’re giving away so I’ll keep my fingers crossed!

  3. Hello 🙂 I m from Bosnia and Herzegovina, and I started sewing a year ago. I haven’t sewed anything from Ottobre magazine or any independants, I have only used Burda magazines because they are only one sewing magazines available in my country and they’re available on German language which I don t know very well. So it s hard but with google translate I pull that off. I sewed for my self for now, and I sewed a lots of stuff. Sewing is so amazing, and I just love it and enjoy every second of it. 🙂 I would love to have some more sewing magazins , specially to try Ottobre magazine. I sew on internet that they re very good. 🙂 And I m a new follower of your blog, it s amazing and helpful. Keep up the good work 🙂

  4. i’m originally from Indonesia but am now living in Finland (yeah, i know, the land of Ottobre magazines :D). i have some used Ottobre kids magazines that i’m planning to make clothes from someday… like when i have a child? …but have never actually done it yet. i once copied a leggings pattern from a friend’s Ottobre magazine and did actually make a pair of leggings and also altered it to make a pair of tights. 🙂

i’ve been following your blog for about half a year now, and was tempted to enter the sew-along last month, but in the end i didn’t because i wasn’t sure if i would actually have time. maybe next time.

the autumn/winter Ottobre you’re giving away looks great with all the basic essentials for Finnish autumn/winter, i’d sure love to make those dresses. but even if i don’t win it, thanks so much for sharing the info about Pattern Postie! they have such a huge range of patterns, i think i’m gonna go crazy trying to choose which one(s) i want to get!

  5. Hello hello, fellow kiwi sewer here actually. Im up in the sunny Coromandel / Auckland some parts of the week. I have never seen that mag and would love to explore it. Am enjoying Indie pattern month, sewed up and posted about my first indie pattern last night the Pendrell Blouse…ordered some wolfy pants from Papercut and am losing sleep with excitement of how cool they are gonna be when they are done – mucho colours!! yahoo!!

  6. Thanks for the heads up on Pattern Postie, hadn’t heard of it before now, we love a pattern sale!!!
I would love to enter the draw for the Ottobre Magazine…

Happy sewing everyone… wish i was home sewing now where it’s nice and warm, instead of at work earning money to buy more FABRIC!!!

  7. Hi from Europe! I use Burda all the time, but have never tried Ottobre. I hear rave reviews – maybe I’ll get a chance to try it… fingers crossed.

  8. Awesome! I recently discovered Pattern Postie and ordered a Burda back issue which was much better than paying $7 for a single pattern download from their website. I’ve heard of Ottobre but never seen an issue before! I’m sewing along with you but a month behind.. I just traced out my first Burda magazine pattern using your great guide from last month. Thanks for that, it was really helpful! I’m sewing in Dunedin, NZ.

  9. Ok…so don’t put me in the draw because I haven’t even started my stripy pleated peplum job from Manequim yet. I just wanted to say “Another sewing magazine?!? OMFreakingG!!!”

Dear Person Who Gets One…Please blog what you make!

  10. Hi there! I’m a Kiwi living in North Carolina, USA. I had my first experience at sewing with an Ottobre pattern recently – from the Spring/Summer 2012 issue that you are giving away to the NZers. It’s an awesome issue – I want to make everything in it! I made two of the short-sleeved knit cardigan, and three of the wraparound skirt, and wear then all frequently. I’d love to go in the international draw! Thanks!!

  11. I’m in Hamilton, New Zealand! And I’ve never even heard of Ottobre.

Sidenote: WHY are patterns so expensive here? I don’t mind paying for them, but I die a little inside to see Americans able to pick them up on sale for 99c and we always have to pay at least $20. I’m happy to see Pattern Postie though, because if I’m stuck paying $$ I’d rather get it from someone like this than Spotlight.

  12. I sewed from Ottobre, but only from the childrens magazines. The womens’ issue is available here in the netherlands, but I never ever saw something interesting enough to make me buy it. I have quite some experience with Burda-sewing. And ever since I read your post on tracing Burda patterns, I find myself putting on my “Burda-vision” when tracing patterns. And then I laugh out loud. Yay!
I am participating in your Indie Pattern Month. And I posted my Deer and Doe Pavot today.

    • Yay! Burda-vision is spreading, this makes me really happy and you gave me a giggle 😉
I’ve got you in the draw 🙂 Good luck and I’m going to go check out your Pavot now…

  13. I from the lovely, yet rainy, Pacific Northwest in Washington State! I adore sewing from Burda and have learned so much from their magazine. Ottobre, I have never seen before and from looking at the covers, I think I might be in <3. Thank you so much for your giveaways and that they are international 🙂 I've been following your blog for a couple of months and I am so happy to have found you!

    • I always dislike when a blog/website only gives away to one country so I want to include everyone, while also giving my smaller Kiwi audience a chance too. We are lucky Bronwyn was so genenrous. I’ve got you in the draw 🙂 Good luck

  14. ooooohhhh – I am not really sewing this month, so missing out on the indie sew-along (boo hoo), and I have only seen the children’s version of this magazine in the shops here in Belgium, it would be wonderful to see what they offer for adults 🙂

  15. Hi from British Columbia, Canada. I had a Burda subscription for years and dropped it 2 years ago. Ottobre magazine has been on my wish list for a while now, just haven’t taken the plunge yet.

  16. Hello from the United States, northwest Iowa to be more specific. I have never seen Ottobre magazine but would love to see and try it. Thanks!

  17. Our weather here in Sydney is very much NZ-like at the moment – my friend from the Lower Hutt tells me she didn’t realize that rain doesn’t normally fall sideways until she left windy Wellington! The fashions in Ottobre are quite unique, so I definitely think it counts as an independent

  18. Wow how generous! I’ve never heard of this magazine. I wish I could join your indie sewalong, but I’m still working on my Burda jacket from last month’s sewalong. Anyway, I’m in Brazil and I’ve never sewn with this magazine =) PS I’m not tired of the cold yet =) I think its because we don’t get snow in Rio so its not really that cold compared to some!

  19. i sew a lot from burda and have recently discovered my image, but would love to try ottobre. hope you didn’t get blown away. Cathy from christchurch, nz

  20. I want in, PLEASE! I am sewing in Spain, and I have sewn from an Ottobre before, about 8 years ago I made a little boy blazer from one of their patterns… I would love to see how their grown-up stuff sews up!

  21. How did I NOT know about Pattern Postie before? This could be a great thing or a bad thing (my sewing heart will be happy, but my bank balance may be sad!). I sew in beautiful Te Whanganui-a-Tara just like you! I couldn’t do the Burda sew-a-long but I’m determined to do this indie pattern sew-a-long! (even if I’m leaving it a bit late to start – eek!)

  22. thanks for this post – I’ve never heard of Ottobre, I’d love to have a copy for the mag for NZ 🙂
I am sewing along this month – just trying to decide whether to put a ruffle on my skirt or not!

  23. wow.. this is such lovely giveaway.. Have never seen bursa or ottobre magazine in my news stand.. will love to enter under “International” and hope to win to take a look at the magazine.. 😀

  24. Hi I’m in Australia, and I love Ottobre. I have only sewn from their children’s patterns, so would love an opportunity to sew one of their women’s patterns. Their kids patterns are wonderful I love how they just always work, their drafting is precision 🙂

  25. Ok! seriously have I been living under a rock!! Why have I not seen this websight and magazine before? I live in Tauranga NZ and get around the country frequently – I know of the whereabouts of every fabric shop in the country ( and visit them) subscribe to dozens of sewing blogs and websites and yet I’ve missed a significant local site and Ottobre magazine- probably just as well as I don’t know where I’d put them anyway as I just about every monthly Burda since 1976! But please count me in!

  26. I’m sewing in Auckland NZ, I haven’t sewed anything from Ottobre mag or any independants, but i have sewed dresses for my self and my daughter from the kwik sew from pattern postie. I would like to try some papercut, colette and sewaholic patterns. Whoops forgot, i have sewn Megan Neilson and love them!

  27. Oooo, thank you both! I’m in the US, where we very occasionally see Burda mags, but the Ottobre is an elusive beast that I’d love to see up close!

  28. Hi, I am from Indonesia and currently living in Macau. I heard Ottobre magazine but never read them. So, I’d love to have it and sew some of their patterns.
    Thanks.

  29. Sewing in Auckland, New Zealand – I have not used Ottobre but would love to – I am not sewing along (I found out too late) – thank you!

  30. Oh, what a lovely offer! I am not in NZ (as you know…and apparently our posts rather dislike one another, holy lengthy post problems). I have a Burda magazine and am planning a make from it, but have never used nor purchased an Ottobre magazine, nor have I seen one here in stores. I’m very excited to get my hands on one!!

I am also sewing along with you in the Indie Patterns month and, have just posted my first makes here: I gave you, Kat and the sewalong a shout-out and used 3 Indie patterns in the mix.
